Experts from the Betting & Gaming Council (BGC) have forecasted that the UK betting and gaming industry will open 15,000 new job vacancies in the tech sector within the next 5 years. The creation of more highly skilled roles in the industry is envisioned under the aegis of the government’s ‘Leveling Up’ job creation agenda, in collaboration with the Purpose Coalition.

Leveling Up Goals to Benefit UK

The BGC noted that the leveling up goals would benefit the entire country. The statement comes after the Purpose Coalition applauded the BGC for their arduous work toward setting a global standard in delivering several social mobility objectives to offset the economic damage done by the pandemic.

BGC CEO Michael Dugher reaffirmed the BGC’s commitment to building a world-class gambling industry that commands respect for understanding and engaging with the concerns faced by the industry members and the employed staff.

Dugher appreciated the BGC members’ efforts in providing well-paid and highly skilled job profiles across various sectors such as hospitality, tech, and retail. However, poorly conceived regulations might obstruct the potential success of the association’s endeavors.

He went on to say that the Purpose Commission report provided the BGC a direction toward delivering more meaningful measures of progress. According to Dugher, the report will aid the association’s members in expanding their outlook and creating multiple job opportunities across the UK.

A good portion of these high-skilled roles will revolve around tech specialized positions in a bid to maintain the industry’s commitment to safer gaming practices. This applies mainly to online casinos and their affiliates, many of which operate outside of London.

Purpose Commission Appreciates BGC Members’ Efforts

The Purpose Commission report emphasized the contribution of the BGC members, referring to them as frontrunners who have engendered development in the entertainment and technology verticals. The betting and gambling industry’s efforts to expand the economic footprint via the creation of sustaining and well-paying job opportunities in the sector were acknowledged by the Purpose Commission chairman, Lord Walney.

The Purpose Coalition is a group that comprises leading businesses such as Amazon, BBC, Gateley, and National Health Service trusts that are focused on delivering environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. These goals are collectively known as the leveling up agenda in the UK.

The leveling up goals form a comprehensive 14-point strategy directed at improving the social aspect of the ESG objectives and the social mobility scenario in Britain. The strategy is a part of the British government’s post-COVID bounce-back plan. BGC announced its support for the British government’s job creation agenda in February 2022.

BGC to Devise Better Safety Standards Alongside New Jobs

In addition to creating lucrative job openings for the British population, the BGC wishes to leverage technology to devise higher safety standards for online gambling. The vacancies will demand an advanced technological skill-set to improve and uphold the industry standards in promoting safer gaming practices. The objective runs in tandem with the government’s upcoming review of the 2005 Gambling Act.

Nearly two-thirds of these vacancies will be located outside of London. About 20,000 positions will be created in West Midlands County. The county is home to ‘tech powerhouses’ such as Flutter Entertainment based in the city of Leeds, and bet365, located in Stoke-on-Trent, that currently employ 1,700 and 4,000 people, respectively.

MP Joe Gideon Welcomes Purpose Coalition Report

Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Jo Gideon welcomed the Purpose Coalition report that highlighted the British gaming industry’s role in spearheading the government’s leveling up agenda across Britain. Gideon also praised the efforts of bet365 in being a prominent provider of excellent long-term work opportunities to the residents of the city.

Gideon was appreciative of the emerging role of organizations in dealing with the legacy of Covid-19 and countering imminent challenges such as the cost of living. In his opinion, the role of BGC members in driving job creation has acquired due prominence.
