The European Commission Wednesday said it will convene a meeting
of European economy ministers to discuss matters around the sale of
U.S. automaker General Motors Corp.'s (GM) Opel unit.
"We are organizing a meeting with the ministers of all the
members states," said the commission's industry spokesman Ton Van
Lierop. He wasn't able to confirm when the meeting would take
place, but said it would be convened at the "shortest notice" for
information exchange purposes.
The commission was called to action by the Belgian state which
earlier Wednesday sent a letter to the commission, asking it to
ensure any resolution to the future of Opel is fair to all European
countries where GM has operations.
"We are now faced with the involvement on the European side of
only one government in this decision-making process," the letter
said, referring to the German government's recent talks with GM and
potential partners.
