France's GDF Suez SA (SZE.FR) has pulled out of a deal to buy gas company Romana Gas from Italgas, a unit of Snam Rete Gas (SRG.MI), Snam Rete Gas said Tuesday without providing a reason.

The contract for GDF Suez to buy Romana Gas, which supplies gas to the Rome metropolitan area, was signed Oct. 30, 2008, Snam Rete Gas said. A GDF Suez spokesman said he had no comment.

GDF Suez is in talks with its Italian partner Acea SpA about forging closer ties, an executive at GDF Suez said in April. The two companies want to set up a joint venture for gas in Italy, Acea's CEO Giancarlo Cremonesi said at a press conference in June. At the time, Cremonesi said he expectation a "clarification" in the talks in July.

"We are continuing discussions with Acea on the re-organization of GDF Suez's Italian operations," a GDF Suez spokesman said Tuesday.

Snam Rete Gas said it was examining the contract and reserves the right to take measures to protect its rights.

Snam Rete Gas is 52.5%-owned by Eni SpA (E).
