Automaker General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM) ousted Joel Ewanick, the company’s global marketing chief. Ewanick’s ouster comes a little over two years after he joined GM.

The automaker said on Sunday that Ewanick will leave the company effective immediately. Alan Batey, who is the head of U.S. sales and service at GM, has been appointed as global marketing chief of the company on an interim basis.

Greg Martin, a spokesman for GM, said that Ewanick failed to meet the expectations that GM has for its employees. However, Martin did not provide any further details on why Ewanick was ousted.

Ewanick joined the automaker in May 2010, nearly seven months before GM’s IPO. Ewanick came to GM from Nissan North America, where he served as Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer. Prior to that, he served as Vice President of Marketing at Hyundai North America.

Recently, Ewanick had announced that GM would not advertise during the Super Bowl in 2013. He also pulled GM’s paid advertising from Facebook. Both moves were seen as controversial within and outside the company.

GM stock finished sharply lower today. The stock fell 1.58% to finish at $19.36 on volume of 3.53 million.
