“Making marijuana legal at the federal level is the smart thing to do, it’s the right thing to do. I know this as a former prosecutor and I know it as a senator,” added Harris.
Trump has also recently voiced his support for broader cannabis policy reform and rescheduling, stating in a social media post that, “As President, we will continue to focus on research to unlock the medical uses of marijuana to a Schedule 3 drug, and work with Congress to pass common sense laws, including safe banking for state authorized companies, and supporting states rights to pass marijuana laws, like in Florida, that work so well for their citizens.”

Costa Rica awards 57 licenses for cultivation, production of hemp derivatives
Doomed
October 31, 2024
Two years after beginning the process, Costa Rica has finalized the licensing for businesses seeking to cultivate and produce hemp-derived products.
The Central American country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) on Sept. 3 awarded 57 licenses for the two categories, according to The Tico Times.
The licenses are good for six years.
Most of the licenses have been awarded to businesses in Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose, and the province of Guanacaste, the Times reported, citing MAG data.
Costa Rican officials issued the first business license for hemp-derived products on Nov. 8, 2022, to a company named Ingenio Taboga.
A public university, the San Jose-based National University of Costa Rica, was among the early licensees, earning a research license in August 2023, according to the Times.
The Costa Rican government legalized hemp and medical marijuana in March 2022, but progress has been slow.
“What I believe is that we have to walk before we run,” Roy Thompson of the Hemp and Cannabis Council of Costa Rica told the Times.
“We need to build testing and processing infrastructure so that various actors and companies can integrate into the system and produce according to standards and requirements.”
He told the news outlet that hemp production in Cost Rica country is low and “primarily focused on oil production or CBD extraction for medicinal purposes.”
According to Costa Rica Immigration Experts, the MAG stipulates that hemp products can contain up to 1.0% THC but suggests “keeping CBD levels below 0.03% to avoid psychoactive effects.”
1.0% THC? I predict another dud.

Dutch medical marijuana producer Bedrocan returning to Canada
Doomed
October 11, 2024
(This story was updated at 10:35 a.m. Oct. 11 with Bedrocan declining comment.)
Medical marijuana producer Bedrocan International is returning to the Canadian market through the purchase of a facility in Scarborough, Ontario.
Health Canada recently granted the Veendam, Netherlands-based company a cultivation license to grow standardized medical cannabis for Canadian patients, according to a Thursday news release.
Bedrocan declined to comment on MJBizDaily queries about the purchase price and seller’s identity.
The company said it plans to start production early next year.
Bedrocan stopped producing cannabis in Canada after a licensing arrangement with Smiths Falls, Ontario-headquartered Canopy Growth Corp. ended in 2019, according to a company spokesperson.
Bedrocan, which always planned to return to the market, sold its shares in Canopy Growth in 2016 to distance itself from the Canadian company’s strategy for large-scale production of recreational cannabis.
“We are thrilled to be coming back to Canada,” Bedrocan CEO Jaap Erkelens said in a Thursday statement.
“We look forward to serving patients in Canada and positively impacting the Canadian healthcare landscape.”
Bedrocan focuses on producing pharmaceutical-grade cannabis with consistent levels of THC and CBD.
“We have had a strictly pharmaceutical approach since our foundation in 2003,” Erkelens said.
“We use the knowledge we have acquired in more than 20 years of business to produce cannabis products that benefit patients exclusively.”
