Stocks Moving Up Today: BIG, IRE, ALU, GALE, FSLR

Big Lots Inc. (NYSE:BIG): The company posted dismal results and its CEO announced his departure. However, the market seems to take the news in its stride as its stock jumps to $30.68 in its current trading session. It is currently trading at $30.35, up 8.24 percent from its previous close of $28.04.

The company CEO Steve Fishman held the various posts in the company for eight years. However, Big Lots announced slightly better than expected quarterly numbers with $6 million in operating loss for the quarter. On per share basis, its loss for the quarter stood at 10 cents per share, better than expected loss in the range of 20 to 30 cents per share. The company had earned $4.2 million in income for the corresponding quarter of the last year. Big Lots also reported opening of 27 new stores during the quarter. It also spent $51 million for repurchasing 1.6 million shares in the quarter. Big Lots expects to earn consolidated income of $1.91 to $2.10 per share for the fiscal year.

The Bank of Ireland (NYSE:IRE): The stock traded in the range of $6.074 and $6.20 in the current trading session and is currently at $6.08 level, up 3.93 percent from its previous close of $5.85. The Bank of Ireland offers a wide range of financial and banking services. It also deals in time deposits, demand deposits, finance lease receivables and saving accounts. The company also offers foreign currency related services. The company is based out of Dublin in Ireland but is operational in various countries including Canada and the United States. As on December 31, 2010, the bank had 298 bank branches. its stock is trading at the Beta of 2.4. However, the stock is trading below its 20 days moving average price of $6.1 and 50 days moving average price of $6.11. Bank of Ireland commands market capitalization of $4.58 billion and it reported its latest Earnings per Share at -$1.08.

Alcatel Lucent SA (NYSE:ALU): The company stock is currently trading at $1.16, up 4.89 percent from its previous close of $1.10. The stock had opened at $1.16 and has traded in the range of $1.13 and $1.16 in the current trading session. Alcatel Lucent stock commands the Price Earnings ratio of 2.33. The company is set to collaborate with Telefonica for upgrading their Internet Protocol networks. The companies will carry out their initial operations in the Czech Republic and Argentina. The new networks will use Alcatel Lucent’s 7950 Extensible Routing System. Alcatel Lucent stock is trading above its 20 days moving average price and 50 days moving average price of $1.15. The company offers communications and networking solutions. It was earlier known as Alcatel SA and it changed its name in 2006. The company is based out of Paris in France and it was formed in 1898.

Galena Biopharma (NASDAQ:GALE): The company stock is up on the news of its collaboration with Teva for developing and marketing cancer therapy NeuVax in Israel. Galena Biopharma is currently trading at $2.29, up 12.18 percent from its previous close of $2.04. The stock is trading at the beta of 1.32. Galena Biopharma elaborated that Teva will manage the development and regulatory issues related to the drug in Israel. However, the companies did not provide information about the financial terms and conditions. Galena Biopharma is set to receive substantial royalties if the approval for the drug is obtained. The company stock  has traded in the range of $0.36 and $3.54 in the past 52 weeks. However, the stock is trading above its 20 days moving average price of $2.27 and 50 days moving average price of $2.29. Galena Biopharma is based out of Lake Oswego in Oregon.

First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:FSLR): The company stock is currently trading at $28.46, up 3.49 percent from its previous close of $27.50. The stock had opened at $27.52 and has traded in the range of $27.32 and $28.64 in the current trading session. First Solar stock commands the beta of 1.55. The stock is up on the news of its new contract in China. First Solar will be installing its solar panels in China for its first demonstration project in the country. The installation is likely to be carried out in the early part of 2013. First Solar is based out of Tempe in Arizona.
