To be initially eligible for the Rare Earth/Strategic Metals Index, companies must generate at least 50% of their revenues from rare earth/strategic metals or have mining projects with the potential to generate at least 50% of their revenues from rare earth/strategic metals when developed. Rare earth/strategic metals are industrial metals that are typically mined as by-products or secondary metals in operations focused on precious metals and base metals. Compared to base metals, they have more specialized uses and are often more difficult to extract. Currently, approximately 44 elements in the periodic table are considered rare earth/strategic metals. Show more

GREAT NEWS FOR LYNAS!!!

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Malaysia said on Tuesday it has made a consideration to update the licensing conditions of Australia's Lynas Rare Earths (LYC) , covering the import of raw materials that contain natural radioactive material until March 2026.

The consideration will allow Lynas' cracking and leaching activities to continue subject to conditions, Malaysia's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation said in a statement.

Mullen plans to produce more than 100,000 vehicles over 5 years using NexTech lithium sulfur (Li-S) pouch format batteries, which are 60% lighter than today’s EV’s, improving vehicle efficiency and reducing overall energy consumption . NexTech’s Sulphur is sustainably sourced and is a result from recycling oil refinement by-products. These materials are fully recyclable, sustainable, ubiquitously available and inexpensive. Mullen is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in every aspect of its business. This includes the use of low carbon footprint materials and emerging technologies, in this case, readily available Sulphur instead of heavily mined rare earth metals.

President Joe Biden signed an executive order requiring a review of the global supply chains in key industries in an effort to boost domestic production and avoid shortages in critical goods amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Biden's action was spurred in part by the global semiconductor shortage, which began shortly after the coronavirus pandemic hit last year. Semiconductors, commonly known as chips and used in a range of products including cellphones and computers, and were in high demand as consumers around the world purchased equipment to work from home. The shortage has severely impacted automakers and other manufacturers and led to slowdowns in production."

China accounts for over 95% of the world’s production of rare earths, giving it the ability to place US industry and defence in a stranglehold, should it choose. It’s been a significant concern for President Trump’s administration, who have sought avenues to boost domestic production of rare earths. In 2019, the US Commerce Department recommended the US should take urgent steps to boost domestic rare earth production, and recommend stockpiling as a short-term measure, combined with longer-term measures to explore, develop and process more rare earth minerals.
MP Material’s Mountain Pass mine in California is the only operating rare earths mine in the US and has been the subject of much interest from the federal government for that reason. The listing will be a boon to the US government and US industry as a major step in reducing the reliance on China for rare earths.

MP Materials will net around $489m from the merger and a separate stock offering with other investors. The company will use the funds to upgrade outdated processing equipment at Mountain Pass, which has held over from the Molycorp era. Currently, MP Material’s lack of processing equipment means it has to ship over 50,000 tonnes of concentrated rare earths to China each year for processing. $fvac

$UURAF UURAF) ("Ucore" or "the Company") is pleased to announce an upgraded mineral resource ("Resource" or "Mineral Resource") estimate for the Bokan Dotson-Ridge Rare Earth Project in Southeast Alaska ("Bokan" or the "Bokan Project"). The upgrade to the Resource incorporates six additional critical co-product metals (as defined by the U.S. Federal Government)([1]) not previously considered in mineral resource and economic estimates (collectively, the "Critical Co-Products").

Using a total rare earth oxide ("TREO") cut-off grade of 0.40 percent, an additional 38.5 thousand tonnes of the critical and strategic metals, including niobium (Nb), zirconium (Zr), beryllium (Be), hafnium (Hf), titanium (Ti), and vanadium (V) have now been added to the Resource at Bokan. This development is a result of an independent metallurgical assessment by Mr. Ed Bentzen; followed by an update to the geologic model by Mr. Jim Robinson of Aurora Geosciences (Alaska) Ltd. ("Aurora").

"We're pleased to announce this important Resource upgrade as Ucore continues its development of the Bokan Project towards shovel ready status," said Jim McKenzie, President & CEO of Ucore. "The completion of these initial studies continues to add momentum towards our ultimate goal of installing Bokan's unique surface and underground mine facility, and the construction of the planned Alaska Strategic Metals Complex [the "Alaska SMC"] in Ketchikan, Alaska, as defined in our M(3) Plan of Action." $UURAF $REMX

Options Traders Blitz 2 Metals ETFs Amid Trade Tensions

I took advantage of it and got back in at a better PPS than I had originally.

This is being driven by the news cycle now, which has a very short memory. The possibility that the Chinese might halt exports of REM to the U.S. is still very much present.

I think Africa has the most rare earth minerals on the planet.
👍️0
ax57 ax57 5 years ago
I think that the selling is just logical profit-taking. The "hype" is based upon the threat of the Chinese withholding exports of REM to the U.S. as the next round of the trade war. I think that it's a distinct possibility, given that they did that very thing to the Japanese 5 years ago over the seizure of a Chinese fishing boat in Japanese territorial waters.

Now, go back 5 years in the charts and see if you want to miss out on a move like that, especially given today's entry point.

this is a low enough entry point to mitigate the risk

Agreed... I picked up a chunk yesterday, I'm thinking easy double. Gl
👍️0
ax57 ax57 5 years ago
Yes, that volume got my attention. Being an ETF, it didn't run beyond reach the way individual stocks sometimes do.

I researched mpmaterials.com, the owner/operator of the Mountain Pass mine, but they're privately held. The Chinese actually added a tariff to the ore that mpmaterials exports to China for processing. Seems to me they're shooting themselves in the foot, providing incentive to process the ore here.

Either way, this could be a great speculative play on the trade war, and this is a low enough entry point to mitigate the risk.
