5th Annual Earth Day Tree Planting funded
through CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy and the Carbon
Reduction Fund
WGL Energy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) and Sterling Planet
celebrated Earth Day by planting more than 1,200 trees and shrubs
at Springbrook Farm, a dairy farm in Frederick County, Md., on
April 25th. During the partnership’s 5th Annual Earth Day Tree
Planting, volunteers included WGL employees and their families, as
well as customers of CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets from WGL Energy,
including Northern Virginia Community College.
Held the weekend following Earth Day, the tree planting covers
six acres of land alongside a stream in the Monocacy River
Watershed to help restore forested streamside buffers. The restored
area will prevent pollution and runoff into the Monocacy River, a
tributary to the Potomac River which empties into the Atlantic
Ocean via the Chesapeake Bay, and the trees will absorb carbon
dioxide from the air.
“At WGL Energy, we are proud to partner with the Chesapeake Bay
Foundation and Sterling Planet to help increase vegetation
alongside the Monocacy River, and to limit pollution and runoff,”
said WGL Energy’s Manager of Green Products. “As an entity of WGL,
which provides energy answers to the region, WGL Energy
continuously seeks new ways to support the communities in which we
operate, and to find renewable and sustainable solutions for our
customers. We appreciate the partnerships we’ve formed, and our
employees and customers who have participated in this year’s tree
planting.”
The annual Earth Day Tree Plantings are made possible by WGL
Energy customers that choose to reduce their carbon footprint by
matching locally certified CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets to their
natural gas usage. A portion of the proceeds from all CleanSteps®
Carbon Offsets purchased support the Carbon Reduction Fund, which
is managed by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation and used to develop
future clean air and water projects throughout the Chesapeake Bay
Region.
“We are extremely grateful to WGL Energy, its conscientious
customers, and to Sterling Planet. The funds help farmers afford
conservation practices on their farms. That means cleaner rural
streams. That’s good news for trout, other aquatic life, and for
everyone downstream of those farms," said Rob Schnabel, Maryland
restoration scientist at CBF who worked on the project. “We are
proud of what we have accomplished through this innovative
partnership.”
Since 2010, more than 13,000 trees have been planted and almost
$700,000 has been contributed to the Carbon Reduction Fund through
the partnership among WGL Energy, Chesapeake Bay Foundation and
Sterling Planet. To learn more about CleanSteps® Carbon Offsets and
