Friday Fallback Story: H2Rescue Hydrogen Truck Sets World Record, Traveling 2,900 Kilometers on a Single Fill in Real-World Conditions
November 15, 2024
https://fuelcellsworks.com/2024/11/14/fallback-friday/friday-fallback-story-h2rescue-hydrogen-truck-sets-world-record-traveling-2-900-kilometers-on-a-single-fill-in-real-world-conditions

Accelera demonstrates the future of clean hydrogen technology with record breaking journey

In a groundbreaking achievement for the future of hydrogen-powered solutions, Accelera™ by Cummins has set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for the longest distance traveled by a hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCEV) heavy-duty truck without refueling. Acceleraโ€™s zero-emissions H2Rescue truck, a Kenworth T370 prototype designed for emergency response missions, completed an 1,806-mile journey on a single fill on Oct. 25, showcasing the potential of hydrogen technology for zero-emissions transportation and on-site portable power.

Accelera sets Guinness World Record for longest journey by hydrogen-powered truck - Truck News

The carbon-free journey
The truck completed its record-setting journey in central California and was closely monitored and validated by an adjudicator from Guinness World Records who confirmed the truckโ€™s hydrogen tank was sealed before the journey began.

Powered by an Accelera fuel cell engine and a 250kW traction motor, the truck carried 175 kilograms of onboard hydrogen and consumed 168 kilograms of hydrogen while navigating rush hour traffic, between 50 to 55 mph, on public roads, operating in temperatures varying from 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Over the 1,800-mile trip, the hydrogen-filled truck emitted zero pounds of carbon dioxide, a stark contrast to the 664 pounds a standard internal combustion engine vehicle would have produced over the same distance.

A demonstration vehicle like the H2Rescue prototype truck showcases the capabilities of using zero-emissions hydrogen, rather than diesel, for power. Hydrogen as a power source:

- Supports long-range applications with heavy-duty work cycles, like heavy-duty trucks, dump trucks, buses and rail systems
- Generates little to no noise
- Provides zero-emissions power, with water and steam as the only byproducts, making it a key solution for reducing transportation pollution

Partnering for progress
Annually, a fuel cell-powered truck of this size can displace approximately 1,825 gallons of fuel and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 2.5 metric tons. This Class 7 heavy-duty demonstration vehicle, weighing approximately 33,000 pounds, is the result of an innovative collaboration between Accelera, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD).

โ€œThis world record is a triumph for interagency collaboration and proof that hydrogen is a viable alternative fuel for vehicles,โ€ said Nicholas Josefik, Industrial Engineer at the U.S Army Engineer Research and Development Center. โ€œBy using hydrogen, we can improve our Nationโ€™s energy security and reliability.โ€

The H2Rescue demonstration truck offers several benefits for disaster relief sites and can power 20 to 25 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) trailers, support shelters or homes for up to 72 hours without refueling.

โ€œH2Rescue's successful completion of this record-setting evaluation demonstrates the strength of interagency collaboration and public private partnerships,โ€ said Eric Wasiloff, Project Manager with the U.S. Armyโ€™s Ground Vehicle Systems Center. โ€œWe look forward to transitioning lessons learned throughout this project to future fuel cell systems and joint efforts.โ€

Advancing hydrogen technology
Hydrogen fuel cell technology is gaining traction in the heavy-duty and medium-duty trucking industries due to its long driving range, fast refueling times and zero emissions. As the transportation sector moves away from fossil fuels, Acceleraโ€™s fuel cell engines provide the power needed for long-haul routes while significantly reducing environmental impact.

This record-setting achievement underscores the potential of hydrogen fuel cell technology in revolutionizing the transportation industry and paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Hyzon has secured North Americaโ€™s first order for hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric refuse trucks from waste industry pioneer GreenWaste. The truck, developed in partnership with New Way Trucks, is shown during its trial recently in San Jose, Calif.
Hyzon has secured North Americaโ€™s first order for hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric refuse trucks from waste industry pioneer GreenWaste. The truck, developed in partnership with New Way Trucks, is shown during its trial recently in San Jose, Calif.
"We are proud to partner with sustainability leader GreenWaste in this landmark agreement, as it represents a significant leap forward in transforming trucking in the waste industry through both Hyzon's leading Class 8 tractor and refuse collection vehicles," said Hyzon Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Parker Meeks. "It is clear hydrogen-powered refuse collection demand is growing, powered by Hyzon's high-performance hydrogen fuel cells. Our technology offers a compelling value proposition to our customers, providing zero-emission power necessary to meet the demanding challenges of refuse trucks, ensuring they perform day in and day out," added Meeks.

The company also recently announced the Start of Production (SOP) of its revolutionary single-stack 200kW Fuel Cell System (FCS), which enables Hyzon to manufacture standardized FCSs at volume for commercial sale, further accelerating the decarbonization of heavy-duty industries.

Hyzon's FCEVs are the first hydrogen-powered refuse collection FCEVs available for trial and purchase in North America, and GreenWaste is set to make history as the first company in North America to commercially operate them, continuing their commitment to sustainability leadership in the waste industry. UK, thank you for the feedback. I periodically monitor the board as a moderator, and remove duplicate posts, so you didn't have to worry about leaving a duplicate post. However, I am glad that it gave you an opportunity to add more insightful content, as usual. Please post the results of your financial analysis of the company when you complete one and get a chance to do so, as you usually do a very good job, and are much better than me in this area.

HYZN: Your pet Dog --- as with ALL Dogs --- has a ONE-WORD vocabulary, whether or not he's talkin' about Garbage Trucks, the looming US Election, or Tom Brady's chances for an NFL comeback. (And don't forget, "DOG" spelled backwards spells "GOD"!!!)

Seems my post was posted twice (iHUB UI team are horrible ) so let me edit it to add
Hyzon may have found a good niche here as the cost o f trash trucks is already much higher than say class 8 (NKLA) and the difference for the fuel cell transmission is thus less of an issue. add subsidies and they should be near comparable pricing.
The 200kW cell may also be a game changer in costs. Going to take much closer look at their financials moving forward

I was surprised to see my trash collected last week by an electric collection truck (in Northern Virginia). The dog still barked as if it were diesel though

Slowly but surely things are changing - but its painful watching companies having to scrape by to innovate and change the world.

Remarks by Aviva Aron-Dine, Performing the Duties of Assistant Secretary for Tax Policy, on Phase Four of Implementation of the Inflation Reduction Actโ€™s Clean Energy Provisions
October 1, 2024
https://home.treasury.gov/news/press-releases/jy2625

Key quote:

"We also know that clean hydrogen will be critical for reducing emissions from hard-to-decarbonize sectors in heavy industry, and we recognize that the clean hydrogen industry needs certainty. We intend to finalize rules for the section 45V Clean Hydrogen Production Credit by the end of the year. As we continue to review and evaluate the nearly 30,000 comments received on the proposed rules, we are working to include appropriate adjustments and additional flexibilities to help grow the industry and move projects forward, while adhering to the lawโ€™s emissions standards, including the requirement to consider indirect emissions."

Today's positive price action might have to do with this recently passed California Bill.

Assembly Bill No. 1921
CHAPTER 556
An act to amend Section 25741 of the Public Resources Code, relating to energy.
Approved by Governor September 25, 2024. Filed with Secretary of State September 25, 2024
https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=202320240AB1921

Relevant quotes:

"This bill would revise the definition of โ€œrenewable electrical generation facilityโ€ to include a facility that uses fuel cells or linear generators that use specified fuels."

"The facility uses biomass, solar thermal, photovoltaic, wind, geothermal, fuel cells or linear generators using fuels described in this paragraph that otherwise meet the requirements of this subdivision, small hydroelectric generation of 30 megawatts or less, digester gas, municipal solid waste conversion, landfill gas, ocean wave, ocean thermal, or tidal current, and any additions or enhancements to the facility using that technology."

Too expensive ... Even if you can find an open station. $30 / kg / "gallon" and Not Green.
