WGL Selected by District of Columbia to Supply Electricity to more than 700 City Government Accounts

WGL, which has provided energy solutions to the District of
Columbia for more than 165 years, has been selected to supply
approximately 400,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity to more
than 700 city government accounts. Service to these accounts
started this month.
The Electricity Service and Supply Contract awarded by the D.C.
Department of General Service (DGS) to WGL Energy Services provides
a flexible way to ensure electricity powered by a complete
ecosystem of energy sources, including renewables such as solar and
wind.
“We are pleased to have been selected by the District as the
supplier for city government accounts,” said Louis J. Hutchinson,
Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer for WGL, the parent
company of WGL Energy. “By continuing – and expanding – our
relationship with a key energy customer and partner, WGL is helping
the District manage energy as an asset by becoming more energy
efficient, reducing volatility and lowering its carbon
footprint.”
“Transitioning from a 100 percent fixed price, full-requirements
purchasing contract to a block and index strategy saves taxpayers
money, while enabling the District government to integrate
renewable and cost-saving wind power into our electricity supply,”
said Mark Chambers, Sustainability and Energy Management Director
at DGS.
Under the new strategy, DGS will purchase blocks of electricity
at fixed rates and the remaining portion on the PJM real-time
market. The strategy provides a highly structured and progressive
approach to purchasing energy, which mitigates market volatility
and helps stabilize energy costs over time.
