MONTREAL, Sept. 12, 2017 /CNW Telbec/ - The free news
and entertainment portal Canoe.ca, operated by MediaQMI Inc. and
owned by Sun Media Corp. prior to 2015, wishes to inform users that
some of its databases containing records from the period of 1996 to
2008 have been breached. Immediately after learning of the
incident, on September
2nd, Canoe.ca launched a thorough investigation
and found no evidence that the compromised data contained any
financial information, such as credit card numbers, or social
insurance numbers.
The breached data did however contain personal information
pertaining to about one million Anglophone and Francophone users of
the Canoe sites from that period, such as names, email addresses,
mailing addresses and telephone numbers. The information was
provided by users for contests, forums, comments pages or the
hosting of personal pages. No data collected after 2008 has been
compromised.
Canoe.ca takes data security very seriously and would like to
reassure its users that it has taken all necessary steps, with the
help of recognized data security experts, to remediate this data
breach. It has also informed the RCMP, the Office of the Privacy
Commissioner and all relevant provincial privacy commissioners of
the security breach.
Canoe.ca sincerely apologizes to its users and assures them that
it is making every effort to find and contact all users who may be
affected by this illegal access to data collected during the
1996-2008 period.
Anyone concerned about this data breach is invited to call
