Audi AG (NSU.XE) said Wednesday that it intends to cooperate with Hyundai Motor Co. Ltd (005380.SE) to develop fuel-cell technology.

The German car maker said both companies will cross-license patents and grant each other access to non-competitive components, with the aim of bringing the fuel cell to volume-production maturity more quickly and efficiently

"The fuel cell is the most systematic form of electric driving and thus a potent asset in our technology portfolio for the emission-free premium mobility of the future," said Peter Mertens, board member for technical development at Audi.

Audi and Hyundai will also explore other avenues of collaboration on the sustainable technology, the German company said.
