AVX Introduces A New RoHS-Compliant Series of High Voltage Stacked SMPS Capacitors
29 January 2015 - 6:08AM
AVX Corporation, a leading manufacturer of passive components and
interconnect solutions, has introduced a new RoHS-compliant series
of high voltage, DIP-leaded stacked SMPS capacitors. Rated for
1,000–5,000V and capacitance values spanning 100pF to 15µF, the new
RV Series capacitors feature low ESR and ESL, low DC leakage
current, high current handling capabilities, excellent high
frequency performance, and exceptional capacitance retention with
frequency. Available in three dielectrics (C0G, N1500, and X7R) and
six case sizes with five maximum height dimensions spanning 0.120"
to 0.650", the RV Series is ideal for use in a broad range of high
voltage applications, including: medical spectrometry and imaging
equipment, semiconductor test equipment, power conversion and
conditioning, motors and motor drives, high voltage SMPS, and both
commercial and industrial detection, scanning, and quality analysis
equipment. "Many stacked SMPS capacitors for high voltage
applications aren't RoHS compliant, which limits the applications
that they can be designed into. Our new RV Series stacked SMPS
capacitors, which are both RoHS-compliant and designed for use in
the 1,000- to 5,000-volt range, satisfy this gap in the marketplace
and significantly expand the number and types of applications for
which they're an ideal solution," said Nic Billig, product manager
at AVX. In addition to the aforementioned applications, RV Series
stacked SMPS capacitors are well suited for use on the AC input
lines of AC/DC converters in the power supplies of spectrometers
and ultrasound, CT, and MRI equipment, as well as on the high
voltage signal amplifiers between the transmitters and the analog
to digital converter transducers in that same equipment. They are
similarly well suited for use in commercial and industrial air,
food, and water quality analysis equipment, radiation detectors,
and the types of baggage- and body-scanning equipment employed by
the US Department of Homeland Security. Further, the versatile,
RoHS compliant RV Series can also be used as I/O filtering and bulk
storage capacitors in high voltage SMPS, as DC blocking capacitors,
as DC link capacitors in AC/AC and DC/AC motor drive inverters, as
power conditioning capacitors in DC/DC and AC/DC converters, and as
start-and-run capacitors in AC induction motors. C0G RV Series
capacitors feature a capacitance range spanning 100pF to 1.2µF, and
are available with capacitance tolerances of ±5%, ±10%, or ±20%.
N1500 RV Series capacitors feature a capacitance range spanning
100pF to 1.9µF, and are also available with capacitance tolerances
of ±5%, ±10%, or ±20%. X7R RV Series capacitors feature a
capacitance range spanning 100pF to 15µF, and are available with
capacitance tolerances of ±10%, ±20%, or +80%, -20%. Operating
temperatures for the series span -55°C to +125°C regardless of
dielectric. For more information about AVX's new RoHS-compliant RV
