Cigna (NYSE: CI) is taking a number of steps to help people in
Florida who are affected by Hurricane Irma.
The company has expanded access to its 24x7 telephone help
line to provide personal assistance and support for all Florida
residents. Phone lines are staffed with qualified clinicians who
are available to speak with people about how to cope with loss,
anxiety, stress or other issues resulting from the hurricane.
In addition, for Florida customers, Cigna and Cigna-HealthSpring
have lifted prescription refill restrictions (“too soon to refill”)
and is encouraging customers to use the retail pharmacy that is
most convenient for them even if their benefit plan requires the
use of Cigna's mail order pharmacy. Cigna is also contacting
affected customers who use Cigna's Specialty Pharmacy services to
help them make alternate arrangements.
Cigna and Cigna-HealthSpring have also waived prior
authorization requirements for acute medical care and behavioral
health services for Florida customers, and will authorize
non-emergency out-of-network services at an in-network level when
in-network services are not available because of disruption caused
by the hurricane.
For group disability insurance customers, Cigna will extend, as
necessary, any claim filing deadlines for providers, insureds,
certificate holders or enrollees.
The company will also forgive Florida customers’ late payment of
premiums in September.
“Once again we are witnessing a horrific natural disaster that
is taking a terrible toll and disrupting millions of lives,” said
Scott Evelyn, president of Cigna's South Florida market. “We’re
focused on the well-being of our customers and want to make it as
easy as possible for them to access the care and medicines they
need during this stressful and difficult time. We also encourage
anyone affected by Hurricane Irma to use Cigna's 24x7 telephone
help line if they need emotional or other support and
assistance.”
People who do not have health benefits or employee assistance
program benefits with Cigna can call the help line using a special
toll-free number - 866.912.1687 - 24 hours a day through
October 15.
Customers who have health benefits or employee assistance
program benefits with Cigna should call the help line using the
