Symbol Mobile Computers and Wireless Infrastructure Speed Merchandise Tracking and Delivery Process for Canada's Largest Liquidator HOLTSVILLE, N.Y., Dec. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(TM), today announced that Liquidation World, Canada's largest liquidator, has deployed a complete Symbol enterprise mobility solution to create cost savings across the company and increase efficiencies in the inventory tracking, selection and shipping process. Liquidation World selected Symbol MC3000 and MC9000 mobile computers and WS2000 and WS5100 wireless switches, along with AP100 and AP300 access ports for its distribution facilities, corporate offices and retail outlets. The retail chain also installed Symbol's Mobility Services Platform (MSP) to centrally manage its wireless network infrastructure and mobile computers. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20041029/SYMBOLOGO ) Liquidation World, which offers services including the retail liquidation of consumer merchandise through more than 100 outlets across Canada and the United States, uses the Symbol enterprise mobility solution in collaboration with Magstar Total Retail(R) merchandise management system to track inventory, select merchandise, manage shipments to and from the distribution center, fill orders and provide management reports. Prior to the Symbol implementation, all order processing, shipping, receiving and inventory was done through the use of a manual paper-based system. "The Mobility Services Platform, combined with Symbol's wireless switch and access port architecture, is the most cost-effective and user-friendly solution we found for managing our wireless network," said Chad Richardson, director of information systems, Liquidation World. "We expect the cost savings generated by Symbol's enterprise mobility system to enable us to offer even better deals to our customers, which is what Liquidation World is all about." To facilitate speedy processing in distribution centers, Symbol enables Liquidation World to equip each of its employees with a mobile computer to access the network anywhere within the building. When inventory reaches a distribution center, the highly rugged MC9000 mobile computers are used to scan inventory. Employees called "splitters" then use the versatile and highly ergonomic MC3000 mobile computers to scan individual merchandise they have selected for specific stores. Those items are shipped to the more than 100 outlets, where additional employees also use MC3000 mobile computers to scan the merchandise for receiving and merchandising. With each scan, the central network automatically updates Liquidation World's inventory monitoring system. The Symbol enterprise mobility system makes it possible to do in a few hours, with no paper, what once took employees a full day to accomplish. In addition, the management of delivery truck schedules has been improved by 75 percent, allowing for more deliveries to be processed in less time. Symbol's wireless infrastructure delivers secure connectivity and a system that allows for central management of all access ports and mobile computers on the network. This system, Symbol's Management Services Platform (MSP), allows Liquidation World to centrally configure and manage access ports and run diagnostics to ensure proper functionality and battery life. The increased central control benefits Liquidation World with overall reduced costs. "Symbol provides end-to-end enterprise mobility solutions that let organizations capture information in real time, move inventory to the point of greatest impact and manage the unimpeded flow of information and inventory with exceptional efficiency and security," said Gerald McNerney, senior director, supply chain execution solutions, Symbol Technologies. "With the use of our solutions, retailers such as Liquidation World can experience the benefits associated with having on-going, real-time insight into their operations."
