Times Community News Acquires La Canada Valley Sun and Crescenta
Valley Sun Newspapers LOS ANGELES, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- The Los
Angeles Times announced today that its Times Community News
division has acquired the La Canada Valley Sun and the Crescenta
Valley Sun from Century Group newspapers. The La Canada Valley Sun
serves La Canada Flintridge, Calif., and is distributed to 10,000
homes and businesses on Thursdays. The Crescenta Valley Sun serves
La Crescenta, Montrose and northern Glendale, and has a Friday
circulation of 15,000. Both weekly papers are located near
Glendale, where Times Community News publishes three newspapers.
The Valley Sun newspapers will become part of the Times Community
News group, which publishes six newspapers: The Daily Pilot in
Newport Beach/Costa Mesa, Glendale News-Press, Burbank Leader,
Foothill Leader, Huntington Beach Independent and Laguna Beach
Coastline Pilot. Will Fleet, publisher of the Glendale News-Press,
Foothill Leader and Burbank Leader, will oversee the Valley Sun
newspapers. "We believe in the foothill area community, and we are
impressed with the distinctly local newspapers that the Valley Sun
staff has built over the years," said Fleet. "We're looking forward
to becoming even more involved in the La Canada and La Crescenta
communities." Jerry Bean, president and owner of The Century Group,
stated, "I agreed to sell these papers to The Times in part because
of its reputation for producing quality newspapers. We wouldn't
have sold to just anyone." Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Bean purchased the La Canada Valley Sun in 1989 from legendary
local editor Joe DuPlain, who had published the newspaper for 40
years. Bean launched the Crescenta Valley Sun in 2002. The Century
Group also publishes seven weekly newspapers in the Inland Southern
California area near Riverside and San Bernardino. Bean started the
company in 1987 after a 20-year career with the Gannett Co. Times
Community News newspapers maintain separate editorial and business
staffs from those of The Times, and focus exclusively on in-depth
local coverage of their respective communities. The Daily Pilot and
Glendale News-Press have won the California Newspaper Publishers
Assn.'s general excellence award in their category. DATASOURCE: Los
