French media group Vivendi SA (VIV.FR) seeks to buy French TV channel BeIn Sports, currently owned by Qatar's sovereign fund, French newspaper Liberation reported Thursday, citing unidentified sources.

Vivendi would pay BeIn Sports shares in its pay-TV unit Canal Plus or in Vivendi itself, the newspaper said, adding that some market analysts value BeIn Sports at 500 million euros ($545 million).

BeIn Sports, which holds rights to broadcast French football games and NBA basketball games, competes aggressively with Canal Plus on the French pay TV market.

A spokesman at Vivendi said the company won't make any comment on the report while a spokeswoman at BeIn Sports wasn't immediately able to comment.

Vivendi has embarked in a asset buying spree in video games companies and Italian telecom after raising cash from the sale of its French telecom unit and its stake in Activision Blizzard.
