The Weekly Retail Chain Store Sales Index fell 0.4% in the week
ended Saturday from the previous week on a seasonally adjusted,
comparable-store basis, according to data compiled by Goldman Sachs
and Retail Economist LLC.
"Housing-related retail spending at furniture and
home-improvement retailers has been consistently leading the
industry and the past week's performance was no different,"
according to Michael Niemira, chief economist of Retail Economist.
He added that unfavorable weather leading up to Memorial Day
weekend also likely contributed to the week-over-week softness.
On a year-to-year basis, the weekly reading increased 3%.
The index was previously called the International Council of
Shopping Centers and Goldman Sachs Retail Chain Store Sales
Index.
