New Coupling Device From Dana Corporation Improves Braking System on Redesigned DaimlerChrysler Minivan Platform TOLEDO, Ohio, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Dana Corporation announced today that it has been awarded a multi-year contract to supply a new coupling device designed to work with new, more corrosion-resistant brake lines. The mechanical lock will be used on the brake lines for the redesigned Dodge Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/19990903/DANA ) Dana's patented mechanical lock was developed to address assembly issues resulting from new, more corrosion-resistant brake lines that are difficult to braze. The new coupling device allows coated tubes, such as those coated with Nygal and Galfan, to be joined without the additional costs and components normally required. The result is a more robust assembly process that eliminates over- and under-torque concerns, reduces alignment issues, and increases sealing performance by the reduction of leak paths. "This mechanical lock is another example of Dana innovation providing value to our customers," said Bill Carroll, Dana's acting president and chief operating officer. "We are able to offer superior coupling performance with more durable lines at a competitive price." Manufactured at Dana's Pensacola, Fla., facility, the mechanical lock incorporates a novel design that replaces the tube nut with a carefully designed crimped type shell to "mechanically lock" the tube in place. This replaces the tube-O connector and O-ring with a swagged shell, which can be prone to misalignment and leak issues. This is also applicable to power steering and air-conditioning applications. "Dana has a 100-year heritage of innovation in both products and processes," said Mike Laisure, president of Dana's Engine and Fluid Management Group. "Often times, process innovation is just as key in bringing new products to market. Dana's new mechanical lock is an example of both types of innovation."
