WageWorks Supports Hurricane Relief Efforts Through Innovative Fundraising Program
01 February 2018 - 12:28PM
WageWorks, Inc. (NYSE: WAGE), a leader in administering
Consumer-Directed Benefits, raised more than $129,000 in 2017 for
Direct Relief ’s Hurricane Community Health Fund through the use of
a company sponsored paid leave donation program. In the wake of the
devastating hurricanes in Texas and Florida, WageWorks initiated a
charitable leave donation program allowing employees to convert
unused Paid Time Off (PTO) or floating holidays into cash to donate
to a pooled fund.
WageWorks implemented the charitable leave donation program, a
first of its kind for the company, based on employee feedback to
provide an avenue for employees who do not have readily expendable
resources to donate to recovery efforts in Texas and Florida. The
program’s initial goal was to raise $50,000 from September 25, 2017
to December 24, 2017. Within just two months, employees raised
$62,000 and were challenged to reach a new goal of $100,000, which
was quickly surpassed.
“Many of our employees knew someone who was impacted by
hurricanes Harvey or Irma or were directly affected, so it was
extremely important that WageWorks provide a way to support
disaster relief efforts,” said Kim Wilford, General Counsel and
Corporate Secretary. “The charitable leave donation program
introduced a new way for WageWorks employees to help those in need,
and their generosity is astounding.”
Direct Relief’s Hurricane Community Health Fund supports
community health centers and free and charitable clinics for the
benefit of the most vulnerable residents in hurricane-affected
communities, particularly those with low incomes and lack of
insurance. On December 29, 2017, Direct Relief received a donation
of $129,316.24 from WageWorks, Inc.
“We are deeply grateful to the employees of WageWorks for their
generosity,” said Thomas Tighe, Direct Relief’s President and CEO.
“This donation will enable Direct Relief to provide essential
medical resources to free clinics, community health centers, and
other healthcare organizations in Texas and Florida that treat
people who would otherwise lack access to care. WageWorks employees
graciously donated their hard-earned vacation time to help others
in need. That is truly inspiring.” About
