BMW AG said Thursday that vehicle sales in the third quarter
declined amid the semiconductor shortage that is affecting
automotive production world-wide.
The German premium car maker said global sales for its BMW, MINI
and Rolls-Royce cars fell 12% on-year to 593,189 vehicles during
the three-month period. For the first nine months of the year,
however, BMW group sales rose 18% to 1.9 million vehicles.
BMW said it has adjusted production individually due to the
shortage of semiconductor components and that it expects the supply
situation to remain difficult, adding it couldn't rule out the
possibility that sales would be affected in the next months.
"We have so far been able to offset the semiconductor supply
bottlenecks over the full year with a strong operating
performance," said Pieter Nota, who is management board member for
Customer, Brands and Sales at BMW.
"We are confident we can meet our ambitious sales targets and
achieve solid, profitable growth for 2021," he said.
BMW's figures come after German peer Daimler AG said on
Wednesday that global sales at the auto maker's Mercedes-Benz Cars
division declined 30.5% to 434,784 vehicles in the quarter.
