Airbus SE, Orange and Thales SA said Wednesday that they have
been named by the European Commission as part of a consortium that
will carry out a study into a new European space-based
communication system.
The year-long feasibility study, which is worth 7.1 million
euros ($8.6 million), will assess possibilities for a secure
connectivity system for citizens across the European Union, the
companies said in a joint release with the other members of the
consortium.
The study will report back in a year with a preliminary
architectural design and provisional budget, with the possibility
for a public-private partnership in the future.
The consortium consists of Thales subsidiary Thales Alenia
Space, Airbus, Orange, Arianespace, Eutelsat Communications,
Hispasat, OHB SE, SES SA and Telespazio.
