The Lean Construction Institute (LCI) has recognized Balfour
Beatty US’ Bevan Mace, Ph.D., with its 2017 Chairman’s Award in
recognition of his significant contributions to LCI and the
industry as a whole. The annual award is granted to individuals or
an organization that has assisted LCI in transforming the built
environment through Lean construction techniques and tools. Mace
was recognized with the award at LCI Congress 2017 on Oct. 18 in
Anaheim, Calif.
Mace serves as vice president of national operations and Lean
for Balfour Beatty US. With over 16 years’ experience, Mace has led
teams in translating lean philosophies into tactics that enhance
project delivery. These efforts have transformed $5 billion design
concepts into reality for Balfour Beatty clients and partners. He
speaks regularly at industry conferences, including programs
sponsored by LCI, Construction Users Roundtable (CURT),
Construction Owners Association of America (COAA) and most recently
the American Bar Association (ABA). Mace’s focus is on improving
and optimizing delivery of capital projects by nurturing lean
thinking, innovation and knowledge sharing across the company’s
North American operations.
“Bevan has a deep understanding of Lean principles and tools,
and he is enthusiastic and passionate about spreading that
knowledge and helping others to learn and succeed,” said Dan
Heinemeier, executive director for LCI. “His knowledge and
leadership skills are a tremendous asset to the Lean community, and
he has made outstanding and lasting contributions in many areas of
the industry. Bevan is a strong leader who is always ready to help
others start or advance their Lean journey.”
At Balfour Beatty, Mace’s projects encompass project operations
and design implementation, including design and construction Lean
planning, Target Value Delivery (TVD), A3s, Choosing by Advantages
(CBA) and related project coaching. He is deeply involved in
process mapping and standards, modularization and pre-fabrication
best practice sharing, Integrated Project Delivery (IPD), and Lean
culture training with project teams and executive leadership.
Over the years, Mace has contributed significant time and energy
to help strengthen LCI’s programs. In 2016, he was instrumental in
restructuring, strengthening and organizing the LCI Communities of
Practice (CoPs) across North America through his involvement,
leadership and strategic planning.
Mace also led in the scope development and survey design for the
2016 Dodge Data and Analytics Owner Satisfaction study, which has
assisted LCI in establishing the business case for Lean in an
analytical manner. And, to help build awareness and visibility for
LCI’s research findings, he regularly delivers his “Business Case
for Lean” presentation, including national conferences such as LCI
Congress, design forums, CoPs and other industry association
meetings. Mace continues to lead in the scope development and
survey design for the 2017 Dodge Analytics “Lean in Design”
study.
