SMIC Appoints Ms. Shirley Lin as Chief Strategic Advisor

SHANGHAI, China, April 2, 2008 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- Semiconductor
Manufacturing International Corporation ("SMIC", NYSE: SMI; SEHK:
0981.HK) today announced the appointment of Syaru Shirley Lin as
Chief Strategic Advisor. She reports directly to Dr. Richard Chang,
President and CEO of SMIC. Ms. Lin has extensive international
management experience in direct investment, corporate finance, and
mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining SMIC, Ms. Lin was a
partner and managing director at Goldman Sachs & Co. Based in
Hong Kong, she was head of the Principal Investment Area ("PIA") in
the Merchant Banking Division responsible for Asia. During her
tenure, she managed the investment of more than $1 billion in
dozens of public and private companies in various industries and at
various stages of maturity in 11 countries. She also led the PIA's
effort to launch leading Chinese companies such as Alibaba,
Sina.com, and SMIC. Prior to that, she worked in corporate finance
at Goldman Sachs in Singapore and Hong Kong, specializing in the
privatization of state-owned enterprises. She began her career at
Morgan Stanley in New York and Hong Kong, where she focused on
cross-border transactions. She currently sits on the board of
MassMutual Mercuries Life Insurance in Taiwan, as well as Yanfeng
Key Automotive Safety Systems in Shanghai. "Having worked with
