Norsk Hydro on Thursday said Brazil's federal court lifted the final embargo on its Alunorte alumina refinery, allowing it to resume installation and commissioning activities at the facility.

The site had been under court embargo for 19 months, Norsk Hydro said.

The company had been running the refinery at reduced capacity since last year, after authorities ordered it to lower water levels at its bauxite residue deposit, amid fears of possible contamination.

The embargoes hampered the company's plans to transition to a new bauxite residue deposit area, which would have included press filter technology. Norsk Hydro said "The press filter is the most modern and sustainable technology, available in the world, for depositing bauxite residue."

"This is a milestone for Alunorte and will contribute to our agenda towards a more profitable and sustainable Hydro," Chief Executive Hilde Merete Aasheim said.
