STOCKHOLM--Volvo Car Corp. will hire around 400 engineers over
the next 12 months to develop safety, autonomous driving and
electrification technologies, the car maker said Tuesday.
The new recruits will mainly focus on software development, with
the majority based at the company's research and development
headquarters in Gothenburg, it said.
In addition, the company is opening a new research and
development centre in Lund, in southern Sweden.
Volvo recently announced a new partnership with ride-hailing
company Uber Technologies Inc. to jointly develop the next
generation of autonomous driving cars, and earlier this year said
it would launch autonomous driving pilot projects in London and
China. The company also plans to offer a plug-in hybrid variant on
each new model as it replaces its entire product portfolio in the
coming years. It will launch its first fully electric vehicles by
2019.
Volvo Cars is owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co.
and is not affiliated with truck maker Volvo AB (VOLV-B.SK).
