Fiat SpA (F.MI) Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne is meeting Tuesday with the chief of Germany's powerful labor union IG Metall, Berthold Huber, a union spokesman confirmed.

Marchionne is in Germany this week to meet with union, government and company officials to discuss Fiat's bid to acquire General Motors Corp.'s (GM) German unit Adam Opel AG.

The German government has said that if one of the bids for the carmaker is acceptable, it would consider a state-supported trusteeship for Opel - should GM file for bankruptcy before Opel is sold off, protecting Opel from GM's U.S. creditors. However, the government hasn't ruled out insolvency for Opel.
