QUOTE OF THE DAY "If we can break through the old highs, that will help get a leg up, too. It's very funny, one of the things we wonder is whether we'll see 10,000 on the Dow, and that's nothing, it's 2 percent. We could make 10,000 in two strong days. It's a psychological barrier." -- Peter Dunay, chief market and options strategist, Wall Street Access New PriceWatch Alerts for INTC, CMCSA, ERICY, MUSE, and AKAM... MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas markets have not dared to travel too far in either direction as eight of the 15 markets that we track are positive and the cumulative average return of the group stands at a minus 0.015 percent. A lot of activity before the market opens today. At 8:30 a.m., Initial Jobless Claims for the week ending October 25 are expected to have advanced by 1,000 compared to the prior week's 4,000 decline to a seasonally adjusted 386,000. The four-week average held flat in that prior week at 392,250. Sharing the same time slot, Third-Quarter Advance (first look) Gross Domestic Product is expected to have risen by 6.2 percent. This number would compare favorably to the final booking of plus 3.3 percent in the second quarter. Even though the information is already one quarter old, today's report will be the market's first exposure to it and a disappointment may very well move the market lower. Also, the cost of hiring, training and insuring an employee will be released at 8:30 a.m. The Third-Quarter Employment Cost Index is seen at plus 0.9 percent; the same as the prior posting. If you are a currency trader, pay close attention to the 9:00 a.m. hour as Treasury Secretary Snow testifies before the U.S. Senate Banking Committee on foreign exchange policy in Washington. A little later, at 10:00 a.m., the September Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) will be released. The index last came in at minus 0.28, declining from a plus 0.05 in July on continued weakness in the labor market and worsening economic output. At 2:00 p.m., the minutes from the September Federal Open Market Committee meeting will be made public. Be prepared for the investing week ahead with Bernie Schaeffer's FREE Monday Morning Outlook.
