New Holland Agriculture has joined forces with the FIA in their
global campaign to raise awareness and promote education on safer
driving behavior. As official supplier of FIA's Action for Road
Safety campaign, New Holland will display at the Suzuka race track
a T7 Auto Command tractor featuring its award winning ABS
SuperSteer™ system, which significantly increases safety on the
road and in the field, and an FR9050 forage harvester.
An important safety message from a market
leader Safety is a critical issue on the roads, where it is
estimated that 1.3 million people die every year in traffic
accidents. It is equally vital in agriculture, which is one of the
three sectors with the highest rates of injury and death in the
workplace. Operator safety has always been a key priority in
product design and development for New Holland. As Japan's market
leader in high horsepower tractors, combine harvesters and forage
harvesters, New Holland's safety message at the Suzuka track gains
particular weight and significance.
"As manufacturers, there is much we can do to increase safety in
farming through good machine design and safety features," commented
Mr Marco Rimondi, Head of Fiat Industrial APAC Commercial Services.
"At New Holland we devote a lot of resources to developing
equipment that creates the best possible conditions for safe
operation. However, operators also need to be aware of the risks,
and safe driving practices both on the road and in the field. It is
our hope that through our involvement in FIA's campaign we will
succeed in raising awareness and improve the safety record of the
agricultural sector."
Technology at the service of safety
Agricultural equipment is called upon to operate in all weather and
soil conditions, on all types of terrain, uneven grounds and steep
slopes, as well as travelling on the roads. Many of New Holland's
technological advances play a vital role in safeguarding farmers
against the risks they face every day as they operate their
machines.
New Holland's patented ABS SuperSteer™
system, an ingenious application of anti-lock braking
technology to tractors, is an excellent example. While ABS systems
are commonplace on cars and trucks, the added complications of
heavy mounted articulated equipment, uneven terrain and a huge
amount of variation in traction conditions, even from wheel to
wheel, means that an effective antilock braking system for tractors
requires more advanced development. The advanced design of New
Holland's ABS SuperSteer™ has won a silver award in recognition of
its effectiveness. The result is greater braking safety,
maneuverability and safe operation on steep slopes.
The T7 Auto Command™ tractor on display at the racetrack has one
of the key safety features of the continuously variable
transmission on New Holland's high horsepower tractors. The
Active StopStart prevents all movement,
forward or backward, as soon as the tractor stops -- even when
working with heavy loads or on steep slopes.
New Holland's Intelligent Braking System,
which also won an award at Agritechnica 2011, is another feature
that increases the braking safety of tractors towing trailers by
automatically regulating braking force in proportion to the
deceleration of the tractor. The resulting perfect harmonization of
the braking action on the tractor/trailer combination prevents the
risk of dangerous jack-knifing of the trailer.
Designing for safety Visibility and
operator comfort also translate into safety. Driving and operating
modern agricultural machines requires total concentration, as
farmers need to deal with complex operations in often difficult
conditions. One glance at the cab of a New Holland machine is
enough to understand that comfort, ease of use and safety lie at
the heart of its design.
New Holland machines, such as the FR9050 forage harvester on
display in Suzuka, offer 360-degree
visibility, which greatly enhances safe operation. The wide
curved windows, sculpted side door glazed panels and curved rear
windscreen provide a perfect view of the header and spout in all
positions and excellent all round visibility. Electric mirrors and
viewing cameras can further add to visibility, so that the operator
is in full control.
The award winning Sidewinder™ armrest and
the multi-functional Command Grip™ lever
bring together all the machine's main functions in a logical,
ergonomic layout, facilitating safe and intuitive operation.
Safety in maintenance New Holland also
puts safety first in daily maintenance activities. Most daily
checks can be carried out from the ground; hoods and guards opening
are assisted by gas struts; and the majority of adjustments to
harvesters are either fully automated or can be made quickly
without tools.
Partners in safety New Holland's efforts
to ensure safety extend to after sales, with its Original Parts
that fully meet the requirements that are essential to safe and
cost-effective operation. New Holland HFT Japan, New Holland's
