Sybase, Inc. (NYSE: SY), the largest enterprise software and services company exclusively focused on managing and mobilizing information, today announced that two of its customers, the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Maritime Research and Embraer, have been awarded the 21st Century Achievement Award, presented by the Computerworld Honors Program. The program, which recognizes individuals and organizations that use information technology to benefit society, also recognized 17 other Sybase customers among the Laureates in the 2008 competition. The Computerworld Honors Program highlights the important role information technology plays in improving our daily lives, said Dr. Raj Nathan, chief marketing officer, Sybase. As exhibited by these companies, Sybase products provide a unique ability for the use of critical information anytime, anywhere. We applaud the Alfred Wegener Institute, Embraer and all the companies recognized by this prestigious organization. With a size of more than 1.2 terabytes, the PANGAEA archiving system at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Maritime Research (AWI) is among the largest knowledge bases for many geoscientific disciplines. Accessed by researchers across the globe, the PANGAEA system uses the Sybase IQ analytics server to store the more than 1.7 billion data points that are used to understand the overall earth system using advanced geoscientific methods. To date, the system has fueled more than 130 research projects around the world. There is no other scientific data model capable of handling such volumes and this high level of complexity, said Dr. Hannes Grobe, Scientist, AWI. Since many diverse aspects can be combined in a single query, the system opens entirely new avenues of scientific examination, allowing us to contribute significantly to the further exploration of our earth. Embraer, one of the worlds largest aircraft manufacturers, uses Sybase iAnywheres SQL Anywhere as its in-flight test engineering database manager. This solution provides a powerful foundation upon which Embraer conducts hundreds of tests on new aircraft, testing thousands of parameters such as altitude, speed and temperature that are then analyzed to ensure they meet demanding certification requirements. SQL Anywhere operates in a cluster, permits the creation of self-related tables and has an excellent cost/benefit ratio, says Antonio Magno Lima Espechit, Embraer computerized systems engineer. What caught my attention was the databases stupendous performance. Even the most complex queries are solved almost instantaneously. The database returns so fast and it is so stable that we don't worry about it. The following Sybase customers and partners were recognized during the 20th Annual Laureates Medal Ceremony & Gala Awards Evening on June 2, 2008 at the Andrew W.
