SSE PLC said Tuesday that it has appointed Stephen Wheeler managing director of SSE Renewables to succeed Jim Smith, who has decided to step down from his role and retire in April.

The London-listed energy company said Mr. Wheeler will take up the role in January. He is the managing director of SSE Thermal, and has previously acted as managing director of SSE Ireland, as well as general manager for Ireland at SSE Renewables.

Shares at 1239 GMT were up 19.50 pence, or 1.2%, at 1,660.50 pence.
