Providing a collaborative learning environment where each student's
way of thinking can be visualized
Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Systems Business (Thailand) Ltd.
today announced their joint development of an education support
system for the Kingdom of Thailand's Chulalongkorn University
Demonstration Primary and Secondary Schools. The full-scale
operation of this system will commence on February 3 for the
secondary school and on April 1 for the primary school.
Classes that utilize this system will benefit from an "Opinion
Sharing System," which enables students to input their ideas or
answers to questions onto a tablet, which can then be immediately
displayed by the instructor on an electronic blackboard to be
shared with the entire class. It can also simultaneously display
multiple answers and a comparative display of specific answers,
enabling effective collaborative learning.
By using the "Learning Management System," instructors can
significantly improve the efficiency of managing learning
materials, usage logs of assignments or materials used, and the
attendance records, work submitted, and test results of each
student, making it easy to provide support tailored to the
tendencies and educational progress of individual students based on
the analysis results of each student's learning behavior.
Fujitsu and Fujitsu Systems Business (Thailand) will upon
completion of the system's development manage system operations and
provide operation support. They will also train and deploy ICT
support personnel in Thailand, who will plan effective curricula
and provide advice on system utilization, thereby comprehensively
supporting classes using this system.
By utilizing this system, Chulalongkorn University Demonstration
Primary and Secondary Schools will work to drive further use of ICT
in primary and secondary education in the ASEAN region.
Background
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary and Secondary
Schools (established: 1958; total number of students: 2,780), along
with Thailand's highest institution of learning, Chulalongkorn
University, are leaders in advanced education and in fostering the
development of students in the ASEAN region.
Fujitsu started a student performance management system field
trial(1) with Chulalongkorn University in June of 2013, and has
been providing operational know-how in the effective use of ICT in
education. Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary and
Secondary Schools highly rated the efficacy of this trial, along
with Fujitsu's experience and know-how in Japan, and participated
in the "learning project of tomorrow"(2) which Fujitsu started in
September of 2014, and will now implement this system. Also
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary School has made the
decision to implement this system as well, apart from the "learning
project of tomorrow," to provide a consistent educational
environment to children through elementary, middle and high
school.
Features and Effects of the Educational Support System for
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary and Secondary
Schools
This system utilizes Fujitsu's tablet for enterprise customers,
FUJITSU Tablet STYLISTIC Q555, FUJITSU Tablet ARROWS Tab Q704/H,
FUJITSU Tablet ARROWS Tab Q584/H(3), the FUJITSU Server PRIMERGY
TX120 S3 PC server, the Fujitsu Opinion Sharing System for
classroom, and the Fujitsu Learning Management System for course
management.
In developing this system, Fujitsu and Fujitsu Systems Business
(Thailand) have for the first time translated Fujitsu's Opinion
Sharing System into Thai. In addition, they have adapted the
Fujitsu Learning Management System, which is provided to
universities in Japan, for lesson support in elementary and middle
schools, and developed an educational support system specifically
for use by Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary and
Secondary Schools.
1. Starting with equipment installation for one class
For one class each for both elementary school and secondary school
the system will provide around 40 tablets for students and
approximately 20 tablets for instructors, and one server for the
maintenance of learning history and teaching materials.
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary and Secondary
Schools will leverage these tools and plan classes so that all
students will utilize ICT so as to participate in collaborative
learning. Moving forward, as students and instructors become more
familiar with using ICT, the scale of the system can be expanded,
reducing the burden of initial introduction for the school.
Scale of the system
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary School: 1 server, 43
tablets for pupils, 15 tablets for instructors
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Secondary School: 1 server,
40 tablets for students, 20 tablets for instructors
2. Activation of collaborative learning with Opinion Sharing
System
The Fujitsu Opinion Sharing System is a solution that streamlines
effective collaborative learning, which enables the instructor to
instantly display on an electronic blackboard opinions and answers
to questions that have been input into tablets by students so that
the information can be shared by the entire class. With this
solution, student ideas displayed on an electronic blackboard can
be selected and enlarged, and while aggregates or charts are
displayed, text or figures can be added with a pen, enabling active
and effective collaborative learning. In addition, with the ability
to conduct individualized communication between instructors and
each student the system can be adapted to the characteristics of
each student.
3. Management of learning history with Learning Management
System
Recording teaching resources and materials, assignments, tests,
reports, and attendance records into the Learning Management System
is useful in promoting operational efficiency and enhancing
learning results for both instructors and students.
Instructors will be able to manage lessons according to subject and
chronological order, significantly raising efficiency and reducing
the time needed for lesson preparation, recording, and archiving.
Also, because of the "Learning Chart" features, whether or not a
student studied beforehand or if the student properly handed in a
certain assignment can be indicated on a chart through each
student's learning activity history, so that this information can
be utilized for lesson improvements and detailed instruction.
Moreover, students can refer to teaching materials and submit tests
and assignments from their tablets. In addition, as their own
learning activity histories can be referenced, students can go back
and look at test and report results and comments from
instructors.
4. Future Feature Enhancements
By March 2015, the Fujitsu Learning Repository System l, which is
being used by schools participating in the "learning project of
tomorrow" in Japan, is scheduled to be translated into Thai and
incorporated into this system. When using this system and repeating
the process from class preparation and instruction, all learning
materials and images of blackboards used are automatically stored
with information such as dates and course subjects attached. To
create an educational environment that offers students a rich
learning experience, Fujitsu will promote the use of this data in
instruction research and in information exchanges among schools
participating in the "learning project of tomorrow."
Fujitsu intends to use the development of this system for the
Chulalongkorn University Demonstration Primary and Secondary
Schools as an opportunity to further expand its initiatives in the
field of education in Asia.

A field trial commenced in June 2013 at Chulalongkorn University of
a student performance management system based on FUJITSU Education
Solution Campusmate-J/Student series of student support systems. By
integrating a wide variety of data relating student activities,
including student grades and extracurricular activities, it unifies
information needed by instructors and advisors for student support.
It is used by faculty members and other school staff to provide
advice and counseling to students and improve education and other
services provided to students.
(2) Learning project of tomorrow
A project designed to support the creation of a learning
environments suitable for the 21st Century, in which Fujitsu
provides software and equipment necessary for lessons utilizing ICT
in the classroom to a total of six elementary schools and middle
schools, comprising five schools in different regions across Japan,
and one secondary school in the ASEAN region.
(3) ARROWS Tab Q704/H and ARROWS Tab Q584/H
