The U.S. Department of Transportation plans to identify a single
low-cost or ultra-low-cost airline to operate 16 peak afternoon and
evening runway timings at Newark-Liberty International Airport.
"Opening up more slots at Newark to lower-cost carriers will
provide air travelers with more choices and lower prices," the DOT
said. A DOT press release didn't name United Airlines Holdings
Inc., which has a Newark hub, but a notice of proposed reassignment
says United operates many routes "on a monopoly basis."
The Justice Department, which in 2015 said United was seeking
"monopolization" of Newark slots, said Thursday that it applauds
the DOT's efforts to preserve competition. It said "competition in
the airline industry--and at Newark airport in particular--is in
critically short supply."
