New BYOD survey shows employees value mobile data privacy,
leery of wiping capabilities
Zix Corporation (ZixCorp), (NASDAQ: ZIXI), a leader in
email data protection, today released the results of a commissioned
research study focused on employees’ opinions about bring your own
device (BYOD) policies and the value they place on data contained
on personal mobile devices. The uSamp-conducted study — which
surveyed more than 1,000 individuals — revealed that the majority
of respondents cited significant concerns with mobile security
capabilities, such as remote wiping and privacy invasion by
employers.
The study shows that the dominant business uses of personal
devices are checking work email, calendar and contacts – 84% of
respondents said they check work email from their mobile devices,
and 41% do so at least daily. The study indicates, however, that a
large majority of employees surveyed dislike their employer having
the ability to control all or part of the device or access personal
information. In fact, 71 percent of respondents said they would
avoid using personal devices for work if they knew their employer
could remotely wipe their device if it was lost or when the
employee left the company. In addition, 41 percent of respondents
said they would wait a few hours to over a week before reporting
the loss to their company if they knew it would be wiped. This puts
valuable corporate data at risk and increases the chance that
unauthorized individuals can access data on the device.
“For many employees, the personal data on their mobile device is
priceless,” said ZixCorp CEO Rick Spurr. “In turn, it’s
vital for companies to have a BYOD solution that not only meets the
security needs of business but also the convenience, control and
privacy demands of employees. Otherwise, the threat of remote
wiping or loss of privacy could jeopardize the benefits of BYOD or,
worse, corporate data protection.”
Employees are extremely attached to their mobile devices, which
often contain personal data, such as photos and videos. As a
result, 55 percent of respondents said they would rather have their
employer track their location than wipe their mobile devices. Also,
31 percent of respondents would rather lose their wallet than their
phone.
ZixOne® solves these key BYOD challenges by
enabling secure access to corporate email while never allowing that
corporate data to reside on the device where it would be vulnerable
to loss or theft. The ZixOne approach does not include the ability
for companies to wipe data on the device; it’s not required because
corporate email data never resides on the device. It also provides
significant BYOD benefits, including:
- Convenient and secure employee access
to corporate email, calendar and contacts
- Full employee control of personal
device functions, data and apps
- Protection of employee privacy and
trust, as well as mitigated employer legal concerns without access
to any personal data
