BRAMPTON, ON, Aug. 7, 2012 /CNW/ -   - More than $3.8 million was raised and contributed by Loblaw Companies Limited (Loblaw) in 2011 through efforts of its customers, colleagues, franchisees and their employees in Western Canada.  A reflection of the Company's commitment to making a positive difference in communities, these funds supported hundreds of local families, charities and not-for-profit organizations. In Western Canada, Loblaw banner stores include Real Canadian Superstore(®), Your Independent Grocer(™), nofrills(®),( )Extra Foods(®), Real Canadian Wholesale Club(®) and more. Overall in 2011, Loblaw fundraised and donated $38.7 million nationally. Loblaw giving focuses on four key areas: President's Choice(®) Children's Charity, healthy active kids, feeding our neighbours and greening our communities. In all western provinces and territories President's Choice(®) Children's Charity programs has touched the lives of over 131,000 thousand students through over 1500 nutritional programs, as well as supporting numerous programs for people with disabilities throughout the region.  In addition to President's Choice(® )Children's Charity, Loblaw supports a wide-range of programs and initiatives that reflect the unique needs of communities in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon and Northwest Territories. In British Columbia, in addition to the $1,268,000 from President's Choice(®) Children's Charity, $364,000 was raised to support numerous community-led efforts, such as local food banks, YMCA of Greater Vancouver, KidSport BC and other local organizations. In Alberta, in addition to the $628,000 from President's Choice(® )Children's Charity, Loblaw customers, colleagues and franchisees contributed over $466,000 to a variety of organizations.  This includes 'NStep, Calgary Interfaith Food Bank, and many Boys and Girls Clubs throughout the province. In Saskatchewan, in addition to the close to $263,000 from President's Choice(®) Children's Charity, an additional $129,000 was contributed to a variety of organizations, such as the University of Saskatchewan, Battlefords Boys and Girls Club, the YMCA of Regina and the Regina & District Food Bank. In Manitoba, over $492,000 was contributed through President's Choice(®) Children's Charity, and an additional $202,000 was donated to support a variety of other programs such as the Red Cross, Boys & Girls Club of Winnipeg and Strathmillam Children's Centre. In the Yukon and Northwest Territories, over $23,000 was contributed through President's Choice(®) Children's Charity, and an additional $40,000 was raised to support KidSport, YK Food Bank and the Food Bank Society of Whitehorse. Loblaw also supported various emergency relief efforts in Canada. For example, when a devastating fire forced residents of Slave Lake, Alberta from their homes in May 2011, nofrills(®), Real Canadian Superstore(®)( )and Extra Foods(® )stores in Western Canada raised more than $264,000 for the Red Cross Western Canada Severe Weather Fund. President's Choice(®) Children's Charity also granted $2.75 million to support more than 4,000 nutrition programs across the country through its relationships with Breakfast for Learning and Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada. In Western Canada more than $638,000 was donated to 1,533 nutrition programs. Other organizations and programs that benefited from Loblaw fundraising efforts and corporate donations include: WWF-Canada, Food Banks Canada, Tree Canada, Trans Canada Trail, YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, KidSport and NSTEP.
