INTEROUTE WINS CARRIER ACCESS CODE IN GERMANY

Interoute Telecommunications PLC ("Interoute") has made an
important breakthrough in the German telecommunications market
through its wholly owned subsidiary, Interoute Telecom
Deutschland GmbH.

Interoute has been awarded a carrier access code by the BAPT
(Federal Department for Mail and Telecommunications). The
German regulator recently held a lottery for the last two
digits of the access code. Twenty carriers were allowed to
draw a number between 10 and 99 and Interoute chose the figure
66. The number can be used from 1 January 1998 when Germany
deregulates its telecoms market and will enable consumers to
use Interoute's service on their telephones. Interoute will
be able to collect and deliver telecoms traffic from any
telephone within Germany for a fraction of today's costs.

John Mittens, Interoute's Chief Executive said: "Interoute is
confident that it will be amongst the first wave of
alternative carriers in the German telecoms market in early
1998, giving people the option of reducing their telephone
bills significantly. Germany is the largest telecoms market
in Europe and Interoute is well placed to take advantage of
the enormous opportunity the deregulated market presents."

The carrier access code will be promoted under the brand name
"Route 66" which is not only a popular song in Germany but
also a major route into Frankfurt, the centre of Interoute's
German operation. It is therefore a name that symbolises
Interoute's business: the transportation of voice,
information and entertainment.
