Moma Resumes Mining
Kenmare is pleased to report that mining has resumed at the Moma Titanium
Minerals Mine in Mozambique, following a breach of a settling pond that occurred
on 8 October, 2010.
Improvements to the settling pond berm complex were designed, completed and have
been approved. Following a review by the Department of Public Works, we have now
recommenced mining and are building a stockpile of fresh heavy mineral
concentrate (HMC). In order to allow this HMC to dry, the minerals separation
plant will continue to operate for the next 10 days on a stockpile produced
during the commissioning of the plant, following which we will revert to
processing fresh HMC.
Kenmare is making arrangements to help and support the family of a four year old
girl, who was lost during the event. 336 of the houses affected by the pond
breach, out of a total of 388 houses, have now been restored and declared
suitable for use, allowing residents to return home and compensation has been
paid to these families. 25 traditional homes are being rebuilt and some repair
work on the remaining homes is ongoing.
