Dow Jones News
European stock markets rose in early trading Tuesday, with the
Stoxx Europe 600 up by 0.25%, following gains in Asian
equities.
The rise was led by a 0.38% pickup in Italy's FTSE MIB
index.
In currency markets, sterling rose again, up 0.33% against the
dollar to $1.334, and up 0.23% against the euro, to €1.195.
After a few quiet weeks, investors are beginning to look ahead
to the European Central Bank meeting on Thursday.
The ECB signaled at its July meeting that it would reassess the
economic situation in September, when it will also release a fresh
round of forecasts. The latest business surveys from the eurozone
services sector showed growth, but at its slowest pace in 19
months.
In Asia, stocks gained almost across the board. The Nikkei
closed up 0.26% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng is currently up 0.45%,
but Australia's ASX is slightly lower, down 0.25%.
