Rio Tinto on Wednesday said it was temporarily halting
operations at its Kennecott mine near Salt Lake City, Utah,
following an earthquake.
The company said the copper mine was impacted by a 5.7-magnitude
quake that struck close to the town of Magna. "All employees have
been safely accounted for and evacuated from the potential risk
areas," the company said.
The company also said it identified "limited damage to the
operation or risk to the surrounding community."
Rio Tinto is carrying out a detailed inspection of the complex
in conjunction with local emergency services and the Utah
Department of Transportation.
