Chicago State University students to receive
scholarships, mentorships, and potential internship
opportunities
Acting on its commitment to promoting equitable opportunities in
science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, ComEd
has announced nine students currently pursuing STEM-related degrees
at Chicago State University (CSU) as its 2025 ComEd Scholars.
Entering its second year at CSU, the ComEd Scholars program aims
to bridge the gap in funding for STEM education by providing
scholarships to students seeking STEM-related degrees at local
universities. On top of the scholarship funding, ComEd Scholars
receive mentorship from ComEd engineers and professionals as well
as the opportunity to apply for internships at ComEd and its parent
company, Exelon.
In total, ComEd has awarded 90 scholarships to students from
five different educational institutions through the ComEd Scholars
program. The ComEd Scholars program added CSU as an educational
partner in 2023, awarding four scholars from CSU in 2024 and
expanding to award nine CSU students in the second cohort this
year.
“ComEd is committed to building the future leaders of our STEM
workforce by supporting skilled students in northern Illinois,”
said Gil C. Quiniones, President and CEO of ComEd.
“The ComEd Scholars program provides students with the resources
and knowledge to excel in their educational and career journeys,
while instilling confidence that they can make a meaningful impact
in their chosen STEM field, as well as in their community.”
Qualified students with above a 2.8 grade point average and
majors in physics and engineering, computer science, finance and
accounting are nominated by CSU faculty based on their academic
achievement. CSU applicants submit a personal statement,
financial-aid application, and school transcripts. The nine awarded
students in 2025 receive scholarships for necessary financial
assistance to cover educational and related costs that exceed
existing financial aid.
“This uplifting partnership with ComEd helps propel our Chicago
State scholars to the STEM leaders of the future,” said
Zaldwaynaka “Z” Scott, President of Chicago State
University. “This incredible support enables our students to
learn and grow to their fullest potential, leading to a diverse and
talented STEM workforce in our city and across the country. We are
grateful for ComEd’s ongoing commitment to advancing technology,
investing in the future, and promoting innovation for all.”
The ComEd Scholars program is one of several ComEd initiatives
that build and empower a local, diverse workforce. In 2024, more
than 3,000 people participated in ComEd workforce development and
STEM programs.
