Google is laying off hundreds of recruiters in a move to continue operating efficiently.

The search giant of parent company Alphabet, which in January joined a wave of tech companies when it announced the largest layoffs in its history, on Wednesday said the latest round of job cuts comes as recruiters deal with a lower volume of requests.

The reduction in Google's recruiting workforce on a global basis is, however, not part of a wide scale layoff.

"We continue to invest in top engineering and technical talent while also meaningfully slowing the pace of our overall hiring," Google spokesperson Courtenay Mencini said in a statement.

News outlet Semafor reported earlier about the layoffs.
