Marriott International Inc. plans to lay off 673, or roughly
17%, of corporate employees at its headquarters in late October
amid the Covid-19 pandemic, according to a company spokeswoman and
a layoff notice with the Maryland Department of Labor.
The world's largest hotel operator in May said it expects
significant layoffs of non-hotel staffers later this year. It has
furloughed about two-thirds of corporate employees at its Bethesda,
Md., headquarters, along with some hotel-level staffers.
The company plans to bring back some furloughed associates later
this month, said Connie Kim, a Marriott spokeswoman.
The hotel industry is suffering through its worst period in
modern times, as the pandemic has led to world-wide cutbacks in
business travel and cancellations of conference events. Chief
Executive Arne Sorenson called the June quarter, for which Marriott
reported a $234 million loss, "the worst quarter we have ever seen
by far."
