Pilot Prevention Program Funded by PSEG Grows to Statewide Initiative: Children Treating Each Other With Greater Respect PRINCETON, N.J., July 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The seeds of peace have been sown in two elementary schools in Trenton, and now schools throughout New Jersey can reap the benefits of their success. With support from a grant from PSEG, the Princeton Center for Leadership Training (PCLT) developed and implemented two programs at Bayard Elementary School and Trenton Community Charter School: (1) PeacePALS, an elementary school character education program that teaches students to form caring relationships, and (2) the Parents Supporting Parents Network, a peer leadership program that empowers parents to provide support and share effective parenting strategies with one another. A year later, both schools report that students are treating each other with greater respect and parents feel more connected to the schools. PeacePALS has grown into a statewide initiative from the $100,000 in seed money from PSEG. In recognition of the power of PeacePALS to transform the climate of a school community, the New Jersey Department of Human Services has given PCLT a $75,000 grant to support the implementation of PeacePALS in eight Camden schools. Each school is contributing a matching grant of $7,500, demonstrating their commitment to the program. In North Jersey, the Verona School District will also be implementing the program in all four of their elementary schools. Schools that are interested in creating a more caring school community should contact Scott Albert, Program Director, PCLT at (609) 252-9300.
