Appointment of Mr John Devaney


At a meeting of directors of British Steel plc held today, Mr John Devaney 
was appointed a non-executive director of the Company with immediate effect.

Mr Devaney is currently the Executive Chairman of Eastern Group plc.  He has 
a degree in Mechanical Engineering, is a Fellow of the IEE and a Fellow of 
the IMechE.  He has spent the greater part of his career in manufacturing 
industry.

He is also a non-executive director of Midland Bank Plc and NFC Plc.
