A year after Google launched the Google News Initiative, the
company said it is collaborating with McClatchy Co. (MNI) on "The
Compass Experiment," which plans to provide local news for three
unnamed small-to-medium U.S. communities.
Financial specifics weren't disclosed but Alphabet Inc. (GOOG,
GOOGL) unit Google "is helping support the effort financially."
In a blog post, McClatchy Chief Executive Craig Forman said "the
sites will be 100% McClatchy owned and operated and McClatchy will
maintain sole editorial control and ownership of the content.
Google will have no input or involvement in any editorial efforts
or decision making."
