Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times Honored by Investigative Reporters and Editors, Overseas Press Club of America
04 April 2018 - 2:10AM
tronc, Inc. is pleased to announce the Chicago Tribune and Los
Angeles Times have been honored by the 2017 Investigative Reporters
& Editors (IRE) Awards.
The Chicago Tribune’s David Jackson, Gary Marx, Duaa Eldeib,
Alicia Fabbre, and Stacey Wescott were recognized with the IRE
Award for Investigations Triggered by Breaking News for their
series that followed the days and weeks after the death of Chicago
toddler, Semaj Crosby. Their stories exposed the dysfunction at the
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, including
inexcusable government failures in the management of Crosby’s case.
The gut-wrenching and remarkably well-told stories led to state
investigations of the agency.
The Los Angeles Times was a finalist in the Print/Online
category for two investigations, “Mexico’s Housing Debacle: A
Failed Vision” and “The Secret Life of a USC Dean.”
Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. is a grassroots
nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of
investigative reporting. IRE was formed in 1975 to create a
forum in which journalists throughout the world could help each
other by sharing story ideas, newsgathering techniques and news
sources. To see the full list of IRE honorees, visit

In addition, Richard Marosi of the Los Angeles Times was
recognized for his reporting on “Mexico’s Housing Debacle: A Failed
Vision” by the 79th Annual Overseas Press Club of America Awards in
the category for Best reporting in any medium on Latin America.
Drawing on documents, interviews and inspection of 50 developments
from Tijuana to the Gulf of Mexico, Marosi chronicled how
corruption, poor planning and impunity trapped thousands of
Mexicans in unhealthy, sub-standard housing many could not
afford.
The Overseas Press Club of America is the
nation’s oldest and largest association of journalists engaged in
international news. Every April, it awards the most prestigious
prizes devoted exclusively to international news coverage. It was
founded in 1939 by nine foreign correspondents in New York City,
and has grown to 450 members world-wide. The club’s mission is to
uphold the highest standards in news reporting, advance press
freedom and promote good fellowship among colleagues. It also aims
to help educate a new generation of journalists and to contribute
to the freedom and independence of the press throughout the world.
