Leading Telecommunications Operator Selects Voltaire InfiniBand to Help Simplify Delivery of Value Added Services to Customers

Voltaire Ltd. (NASDAQ: VOLT), a leading provider of scale-out
data center fabrics, today announced that Istanbul-based mobile
telecommunications and technology company Turkcell (Turkcell
İletişim Hizmetleri A.Ş.) selected Voltaire’s InfiniBand-based I/O
fabric. Turkcell used Voltaire 20 Gb/s InfiniBand switches to
successfully consolidate more than 18 Oracle® Database 11g
instances onto a single Oracle Real Application Cluster enabling
more efficient delivery of value-added services to customers and
lowering computing costs.
Turkcell is the leading telecommunications and technology
provider in Turkey and the second largest GSM operator in Europe in
terms of subscriber numbers. As a fast growing company that prides
itself in offering hundreds of value-added services ranging from
text messaging to photo sharing and customized ring tones to its
more than 37 million subscribers, Turkcell had created enough new
applications to boost the number of database servers. Before the
infrastructure upgrade, every time Turkcell added a new service, a
new database had to be created, each with its own server running a
proprietary operating system, with individual backup nodes for high
availability. The result was a lot of costly, high-end server
infrastructure that was running at only 10% to 20% utilization.
Turkcell deployed Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real
Applications Clusters on a six-node Linux cluster consisting of HP
ProLiant DL580 servers interconnected with Voltaire 20 Gb/s
InfiniBand switches. Using the solution, Turkcell created a more
streamlined system for launching new services and lowered their
computing costs by using fewer servers and less power.
“We selected Oracle Database 11g and Oracle Real Applications
Clusters with Voltaire InfiniBand with the intent to consolidate
many of our service databases and use just one platform to launch
new value-added services to our customers,” said Hüsnü Şensoy,
Turkcell Database Architect. “Not only have we saved money by
reducing the number of servers in our data center, but we now have
a much more utilized, highly available and flexible system that
will allow us to scale to meet future requirements.”
“Using Voltaire InfiniBand for the solution’s I/O fabric is a
key factor in the improved scalability and cost reduction enabled
by moving to an Oracle Real Application Cluster environment.
Voltaire InfiniBand also supplied the high bandwidth and low
latency we needed to make applications migration run smoothly,”
Şensoy added.
“Voltaire InfiniBand with HP servers running Oracle Database 11g
and Oracle Real Applications Clusters enable Turkcell to
transparently deploy a single database across a cluster of servers
providing high availability and scalability, while lowering
computing costs,” said Asaf Somekh, vice president of marketing,
Voltaire. “We’re pleased to deliver Turkcell a future-proof, high
performing, resilient system that helps them deliver highly
profitable value-added services to their customers throughout
Europe.”
“Customers moving from mainframes to a scale-out infrastructure
model want increased server utilization, high availability and
improved efficiency of the overall system in order to maintain
business continuity,” said Ed Turkel, manager, business
development, Scalable Computing & Infrastructure, HP. “HP
ProLiant servers interconnected with the Voltaire InfiniBand fabric
creates a high performance, cost effective platform to operate
mission-critical applications like an Oracle RAC Database.”
