Free meals for children at risk of hunger in United States
GAITHERSBURG, Md., July 9 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The vast
majority (81 percent) of the 16 million school-aged children who
depend on free or reduced-price lunches during the school year lose
their access to these nutritious meals when the school year ends
because federal meal programs feed only about three million during
the break. To help bridge this gap, the Sodexho Foundation, the
independent, charitable organization of Sodexho, Inc. (NYSE:SDX),
has provided free lunches to children through its summer feeding
program, Feeding Our Future, for the last decade. This year over
7,000 children are benefiting from the program in 18 cities in the
United States: Atlanta; Baltimore; Boston; Chattanooga, Tenn.;
Chicago; Detroit; Ft. Worth, Texas; Honolulu; Houston; Los Angeles;
Miami; Nashville, Tenn.; New York; Oklahoma City; San Jose, Calif.;
St. Louis; Terre Haute, Ind. and Washington, D.C. Created in 1997,
Feeding Our Future provides free, nutritious lunches to children
who are at risk for hunger during the summer months. The Sodexho
Foundation provides grants to local Sodexho accounts to purchase
food for the meals and local Sodexho employees donate time and
labor to prepare the meals each day. Employees work closely with
local community organizations who distribute the meals to children
at more than 72 feeding sites across the country. "As the leading
food service provider to public schools throughout this country, we
see first-hand the importance of good nutrition to support healthy
childhood development and learning," said Stephen J. Brady,
president of the Sodexho Foundation. "Feeding Our Future works to
break the cycle of poverty and hunger by helping these children
keep up with their peers throughout the year." About Sodexho
