SGI Integrates New Program Production System With All-Digital SGI
Server-Based News and Sports Workflow MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and
COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Seeking to
expand one of the world's most advanced and efficient digital news
and sports broadcasting workflows, Danish Broadcasting Corporation
(DR) again turned to the compute power, scalable storage and
integration expertise of Silicon Graphics (NYSE:SGI), as it has
done ever since DR's digital conversion pilot program began in
1999. For this latest phase, Silicon Graphics Broadcast Europe, as
prime contractor, is currently halfway through the process of
enabling DR's asset management and archive system (co-developed by
SGI, Ardendo and DR) to handle workflow for television program
production. This includes installation of DR's third SGI(R)
InfiniteStorage TP9500 system, purchased in June to extend asset
management capabilities throughout the facility. Architected by SGI
and DR, the DR Byen facility in Copenhagen is now a completely
integrated all-digital Sports and News Production System, based on
SGI Media Server(TM) for broadcast systems, SGI(R) InfiniteStorage
systems, SGI(R) Origin(R) family servers and SGI(R) Data Migration
Facility (DMF) software for the SGI and Ardendo-based archive
system. In addition to DR's purchase of the SGI InfiniteStorage
TP9500 system, SGI prime contractor deliverables include special
software development by Silicon Graphics Broadcast Europe to
support the entire workflow and doubling the central SGI server
system from 12 CPU and 24 CPU systems to 24 and 48 CPU systems
respectively, as well as doubling network and Fibre Channel
connections, etc. SGI will also extend disk capacity of the ingest
buffer with an additional 500 hours, extend disk and tape capacity
to handle 13,000 hours browse on-line and 13,000 hours of DVCpro50
raw material near-line, in dual copy. SGI is delivering and
integrating 15 Ardendo ARDCAP dual-channel SDI/SDTI ingest systems,
SGI video servers for studio productions, and developing ingest
applications that support Panasonic P2 cameras. SGI will also
integrate DR's extension of their transcoder cluster with an
additional 24 dual Ardendo Ardenc systems to handle the extra load
of program production. Under a separate agreement, SGI, working
with Avid, is also aiding integration of Avid shared storage
systems and, initially, 100-plus Avid editing systems. All program
production material from the Avid systems will be ingested through
the SGI and Ardendo-based archive system that works both as backup
and nearline storage for the Avid shared storage. This arrangement
enables DR to link all material to their program planning system in
order to better archive and manage raw material. The SGI and
Ardendo archive system will also supply a browse resolution of all
raw material, enabling logging and remote access. "In making their
move from analog to digital infrastructures, broadcasters
throughout Europe and the U.S. have recognized IT as more efficient
and cost-effective, allowing for the ingestion, sharing and storage
of content within and between facilities at speeds faster than real
time. SGI has become the 'go-to' IT solutions architect and
integrated systems provider because we understand broadcast
workflow, and because SGI architecture is based on an open file
system and industry standard video formats and file types, meaning
that a huge variety of products from internationally known and
trusted broadcast equipment and software application providers can
be easily integrated," said Stephan Schindler, general manager,
Silicon Graphics Broadcast Europe. "With our venerable history in
broadcast graphics and video, we have the systems integration
experience and expertise and the high performance, scalable
broadcast servers, and almost infinitely expandable storage to meet
the most demanding and most complex broadcast needs -- as we have
done in the past and will continue to architect and deliver in the
future." SGI's digital infrastructure solutions deliver
interoperability and integration from ingest and edit to play out
and archive in computing, storage, and networking as well as video
production. These solutions simplify, accelerate and optimize
broadcast workflow allowing staff at broadcast companies to have
faster access to archived material and the ability to share video
and audio material across multiple operations. SILICON GRAPHICS |
