                     BellSouth Authorizes Dividend Increase

         Increase Marks 74th Consecutive Dividend Declared by BellSouth

ATLANTA - June 24, 2002 - The board of directors of BellSouth Corporation (NYSE:
BLS) has today approved a 5.3 percent increase in its dividend, declaring a
regular quarterly dividend of 20 cents per common share. The second-quarter
dividend is payable August 1, 2002, to shareholders of record as of the close of
business on July 11, 2002.

BellSouth has approximately 1.9 billion common shares outstanding. This is the
74th consecutive dividend declared by BellSouth.
